St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us
Saint Josephine is the patron saint of victims of human trafficking. She was born around 1869 in Darfur, Sudan, was bought and sold into slavery, and endured ritual abuse which left her with 114 scars.
Her suffering continued until she was purchased by the Italian Vice Consul, who treated her kindly and brought her to Italy. There, she learned about Christianity and found peace in her faith. When her mistress tried to reclaim her, the Italian courts ruled that she had been unlawfully enslaved and declared her free.
Choosing to devote her life to God, Josephine joined a religious order and spent over four decades serving as a cook, doorkeeper, and spiritual mentor.
Despite the pain of her past, she expressed gratitude for her hardships, saying they led her to Christ. She was declared a saint in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
Today, Saint Josephine Bakhita is honored as the patron saint of Sudan, a symbol of forgiveness, resilience, and faith, and the patron saint of victims and survivors of human trafficking.
Gainz4Good leads novenas to St. Josephine, asking for her assistance.
